Instagram is an interesting social media platform. It grows by the day – 14% of Irish people have an account. So why aren’t there more Irish businesses on Instagram?
Although new advertising features have been announced, it is still algorithm-free. This means that Instagram users have a Newsfeed which only shows content from people they follow, in real time. The Explore feed uses an algorithm to suggest new content. Because users can toggle between the two, brands have the undivided attention of followers and the opportunity to reach new ones in two distinctive spaces.
It’s an exciting time to try Instagram, you might even liken it to the early glory days of Facebook, so let’s take a look at some of the Irish brands that are really rocking it?
1. Brown Thomas
As Ireland’s largest luxury retail store it’s no surprise that Brown Thomas has 30k followers, and growing fast. It posts roughly about three times a day, with a mixture of promotions, behind-the-scenes images and pure unadulterated beautiful fashion.
2. Sligo Tourism
The people behind this regional tourism Instagram account post pics with stunning views, local concerts and festivals all year long. It’s good about re-posting other’s images, and has a great hashtag #sligowhoknew to encourage followers to share their own content. With over 9,000 images tagged so far, it’s clear that Sligo Tourism knows… a thing or two about how to start a trend! Other regional tourist bodies take note!
3. Dublin Airport
Although it can be a bit OTT with the hashtags, we forgive Dublin Airport’s social media team simply because the pictures are so cool. It’s Instagram is full of great snaps of the airport and all the comings and goings, the planes, and lots of fun behind-the-scenes antics. Just try and stick to 7 hashtags eh folks?
Most millennials love viral content and celebrity news, which explains why Spin1038 is so popular on Instagram with 46k followers. It posts regularly with engaging images and pop culture references to appeal to its young listeners, and plenty of competitions where the mechanic is simply to follow and repost.
A great example of a fast-paced social media strategy that has an authentic voice with its audience!
5. Irish Design
Nominated for the Sockies 2015 for Best Use of Instagram, this is one of our favourite examples. It uses the platform to showcase events and designers through take-overs. So followers are constantly treated to new creative viewpoints.
It also uses a clever hashtag #ID2015 to give others the opportunity to get their work out there. It makes sense that Instagram is such a perfect fit, as it is a visual platform that is all about exploring and engagement.
