Big brands jumped on the Instagram bandwagon a long time ago but advertising was always limited. Instagram famously didn’t include clickable links in posts and it doesn’t use an algorithm like Facebook or (soon) Twitter.

This is one of the best things about Instagram and one of the worst. For personal use I love the fact that Instagram is an advertising-free zone. But as a marketer it limits what I can do for clients.

That all looks likely to change as Instagram recently announced a new advertising feature called Instagram Carousel and it looks pretty exciting. Instagram Carousel will allow brands create an interactive slideshow of images with a clickable call to action on the last image.

Update: here’s an article on how Old Navy, Banana Republic, and Tiffanys are using them.

It’s ads Luke, but not as we know it!

According to the blog:

One way to look at it is carousel ads bring the potential of multi-page print campaigns to mobile phones – with the added benefit of taking people to a website to learn more

The ads are unobtrusive – if you encounter one in your newsfeed you can simply scroll down past it or swipe right (sound familiar?) to see more. Only brands that you already follow will show up in your newsfeed.

Right now Instagram is rolling this new feature out on a limited basis so it is not an option yet for the majority of businesses. It will be interesting to see how it works out!
