Instagram Ads were previously only available in the US, Canada, UK, Japan, Australia, Germany, France and Brazil…until now!
From 30th September, ads will be available to all advertisers in every market where Facebook advertising is available. With a potential global audience of 400 million, now’s a good time to investigate this new advertising opportunity!
Remember folks: 17% of Irish people have an Instagram account, but what’s more important is that they are the second most active users. 46% of Instagrammers use it every day = it is a sweetly addictive app!
It’s no surprise that the business press are falling over themselves with predictions about Instagram’s ad revenues. EMarketer says that by 2017, Instagram’s mobile ad revenues will reach $2.81 billion (accounting for over 10% of Facebook’s global ad sales). Keep in mind that Instagram doesn’t run a desktop-based product, so this estimate for ad revenues is mobile-only.
Two you’re to start off with: Image and Video format
Videos are 30 seconds long, which is double the amount of time that Instagrammers get! You are not forced to watch the video adverts, you can scroll by just like any other content (For now!). A good tip is to include a URL on the video thumbnail to direct traffic to a site. And for pics, definitely place a call to action on any images you’re promoting (an opportunity overlooked by Jaspersmarket below).
We’ve posted before about how much we love Facebook carousel ads. And we’ve had a look at how some big advertisers are using Instagram carousel ads. The same format is available on Instagram and definitely worth it if you need to tell a story, if you’ve got several images that will spark interest, and of course the last one should be your call to action (on the image).
Use Them To Drive Sales
Of course the huge innovation about Instagram ads is that you can now link from Instagram to, well, wherever you want! There’s a whole series of calls to action, so you can encourage people to “Buy Now” or “Learn More” and take them away from Instagram (for the first time ever!)

How The Big Guys Have Done
Instagram released case studies about the early results achieved by brands such as Mercedes-Benz (below) and McDonalds.
Now It’s Your Turn
To create and run ads for Instagram, you use Facebook’s Power Editor.
Once you sign in to Facebook’s Power Editor, you’ll need to “Create a Campaign“.
In the “objective” menu you, click the pop-up “Create Ads for Instagram”
Once you’re in, you will be familiar with the Facebook Ads format. Choose an objective, select your targeting, upload your creative, and you’re off!
We really like that you can run ads simultaneously on Instagram and Facebook, saves time!
What Will Happen?
Obviously Facebook is going to monetise Instagram, but one of the things that makes it so appealing is its lack of advertising!
Here’s hoping that Facebook doesn’t annoy Instagrammers with boring irrelevant ads, that distracts from everything else.
