Recycled Paper - the Facts

Many organisations have a preferred policy of choosing recycled paper for printing and photocopying. We all know that recycled paper is better for the environment, but did you know that, compared to non-recycled stocks, recycled paper causes:

How do you know when paper is made from recycled materials?

Some recycled paper carries a recycled watermark. But most do not. The only real way to know is to get a technical specification sheet from your designer or printer. Next time you are ordering a print job, just ask for a technical specification on the job to be sure it's truly recycled paper stock being used. (What will a tech spec say?)

Recycled paper is made up of a combination of:

Although there are no set standards, a recycled amount of 75% is generally the level required to be deemed recycled.

Important Note: material carrying a 100% recyclable label does not generally contain any recycled material. It simply means that the paper can be put in your recycling bin!

Is recycled paper any good?

The days when recycled paper produced poor quality print results are long gone. Contemporary de-inking systems result in paper stocks that are pristine white and with surface characteristics resulting in good ink coverage.

Is it more expensive?

Recycled paper is typically more expensive than conventional paper. But the good news is that the price differential is not that significant anymore.

The paper costs of any print job are typically 30-35% of the overall costs. The worst case scenario is that specifying recycled stock should result in an overall price increase of 7-10% in the costs of a job. And if you are a high volume paper user, it should be feasible to buy recycled stocks at similar prices to what you'd pay for conventional stocks.
