Welcome to the Arctic Summer Special edition.

While it's cold outside, we hope you'll find something here that will bring a little warm to your heart!

Polar Bear

There's been a lot of activity in the past quarter in the area of consulting.  Because many brands, agencies and large enterprises are switching on to digital, Maryrose from Brightspark is in demand for her ideas on how to succeed online.  This is a Win Win situation because it gives us the opportunity to deliver edgy ideas to those with the budget to implement.   We love this new development.  Keep the consulting jobs coming!

We're also advising more Enterprise Ireland start-ups on how to create a significant and lasting presence online.  This is due to the fact that EI has finally picked us up on their radar.  Hurray, it's only taken 4 years!

Audiences of the Future - Learning Through Technology

Little Girl

Or how to make sure you don't get ignored by the kids who've only ever known a world with the internet

I recently got to listen to Scottish educator and blogger, Ewan McIntosh, give an inspiring talk about how technology is assisting learning in the classrooms of Scotland.

  • He's got 4 year olds blogging!
  • Empassioned teens critiqueing each other's homework on Bebo.
  • Language skills being enhanced through virtual reality games.
  • Flickr being used for art appreciation.

Irish education officials take note.  Parents and anyone interested in what makes the new generation tick, read on....

The Google Zeitgeist has been replaced with "Cool New Sites'.  It's much more worthwhile to direct you to innovative online happenings, rathen than sustain the cult of celebrity.  Google Zeitgeist is probably all about Big Brother and Paris Hilton this month.Cool New Sites is about not!

Tapping into Passion

Shakira Fans Video: at the Future of Online Advertising Conference, Ron Belanger of Yahoo! presented a case study about Shakira. To promote her last album they ran a competition for fans to upload their 30 second video to "Hips Don't Lie".  The prize was to appear in the video. 10,000 entries were received and the song became the most played song in the history of pop music.  Watch the videos as a 3 min compillation and realise what a wonderful race we human beings are!

Free Mobile Phones

A new mobile operator called Blyk funded by advertising.  Launching in the UK in August, it offers free mobile services to 16-24 year olds paid for by advertisers who get to engage their audience directly.  If you're broke, 17 and in need of a mobile phone, of course you wouldn't mind watching a 60 second video commercial when you switch on your phone! And you'd be delighted to receive discounts on cinema tickets direct to your phone.  Plans are to roll it out across Europe.  I asked how soon for Ireland - unfortunately they're targeting large advertising markets first.  Good article on paid for mobile advertising.

Keeping An Eye On Things

Q.  When is a Blog not a Blog?

A.   When you’re looking at creating a 10 pager website, the intelligent solution is to create the site as a blog.

The standard pages of your site - About Us, Services, etc. - simply become pages on your blog.  It looks identical to a ‘normal’ website. It costs slightly less to produce - always a good thing - and you get the added benefit of having a blog of course!  Talk to us today about how.

Top 5 Reasons to Blog

  • Open communication channel between you and your audience. Replace ‘press section’ of old Web 1.0 sites with a blog and allow your audience to communicate with you through comments.
  • Opportunity to display your knowledge and demonstrate your passion. Whatever it is you’re blogging about, once you get into the habit, it will become second nature, and you will look forward to sharing the snippets of information that you come across over the course of your week. This, in turn, gives your audience a flavour of what you’re about and helps them to form an opinion as to whether they wish to do business with you.
  • Helps your search engine ranking. Because search engines value sites that have frequently changing content, your blog site will score more highly on the search engines than a competitor site that doesn’t change from one end of the year to the next. In addition, when people link to you it accelerates your ranking because one way inbound links are the gold of search engine optimisation.
