Welcome to the summer edition of Walking The Talk

We'll be taking a look at social networking sites, the ideal size for your email list, and get the chance to brag a little about what we've been up to.

Avid readers of the business press will be familiar with the rumours that are doing the rounds that Bebo has a $1 billion price tag on it. Most of you have probably heard of MySpace and Bebo and the term "social networking" but perhaps you're not all that sure what it's all about!

In this edition we take a look at social networking and aim to introduce you to the joys of Bebo, MySpace, Flickr, and more.

Whether you're a parent seeking kudos with your kids, an interested web user who'd like to know more, or a pesky marketing person wanting to know how to get AT millions of people online, there's sure to be something in here for you.

First we introduce you to the world of Bebo, in particular Laura Bennet from Blackrock, a typical Beboer. Bebo rocks! It facilitates creativity, communication, and provides a space for people to be themselves. The only problem with Bebo and sites like it is that they require an awful lot of time...

Then we take a look at social networking sites based around a shared goal or objective. These are the sites that will last because not only do they provide the visitor with the ability to participate by adding their own content, they also provide a community of other enthusiasts to get in touch with. We're currently working on two social networking sites that will be live in a few short months. Watch this space for more details!

Predictably enough the most popular search term worldwide in June was World Cup 2006 and variations on that theme (Brazil, England flag, FIFA).

This was followed closely by Big Brother in Ireland and the UK. In Ireland where we didn't even qualify - World Cup was number 1, Big Brother came 2nd. In England, they had their eyes set on Big Brother 1st, and World Cup 3rd.

The rest of the top 10 for Ireland are pretty indicative of what's on people's minds - holidays/travel/getting away from it all (budget travel, iarnrod eireann, Dublin airport), getting in shape for that holiday (weight loss) money/selling (buy and sell, bank of Ireland).

Number 1 search in Finland in June was Lordi- the mock rock outfit that won the Eurovision and finally put Finland on the Eurovision map. And number 2 search in Israel was the word love.

Q. What is the ideal list size for emails?

A. ...One!

A recent study by ExactTarget, found that open and click through rates were 250% higher for emails sent to lists of less than 100 subscribers than for emails sent to 100,000 subscribers or more.

Smaller is better when it comes to targeting the message and making the communication relevant.
We've produced 5 versions of this Walking The Talk, all with slightly different content. It takes a little longer, but we hope you find it makes for a more interesting read.

Tips on how to keep your content targeted:

Tips include identifying at least one group every time who do not need to receive your message! Your content can't be relevant for all people all of the time, so take the time out to make sure you don't fatigue your list by sending irrelevant material.
