Going on Holiday
February 13, 2004
Why is it that whenever you plan a holiday, the preceding week involves 16 hour days? I am going skiing in Poland on Sunday and this week has been monumental in terms of work. I feel like it's the end of March in terms of what I've achieved!
Don't expect any blogs off me until the week of 23rd February. In the meantime, why not check out a site that's dedicated to all things Irish. Very topical around St Patricks Day no doubt, but as always you heard it here first!
Hard Lessons Learned
February 09, 2004
Next summer, when I'm sneaking a little day at the beach, mid-week "because I can", remind me about last week and the downside of working for yourself!
Last week, I was very not very well at all. It wasn't just my second bad cold in January, it turned out to be a lung and ear infection. It required a visit to the doctor, the first since my return to Ireland in 2001.
The doctor told me that I should rest up and take it easy. This was at 11am on Tuesday. I knew that I couldn't spare the time for resting up until 3pm on Friday when the week's deadlines were over. I felt so sorry for myself. Not for me the video/7up recovery combo. No, I was busy on documents and meetings, and responding to emails and the never ceasing telephone.
By the time Friday afternoon came, the antibiotics had worked a treat, and so I didn't really feel the need to take to the couch.
Thankfully, this week is looking altogether more positive. Spring has definitely made an appearance: outside the window there is a smattering of daffodils. There does seem to be a stretch in the evenings . . and I'm going on a week's holiday at the end of the week. Roll on the weekend!
In case you are unfortunate enough to need a doctor and are in the heart of the city, I highly recommend Dr. King, whose rooms are downstairs from the City Pharmacy on Dame Street. He and another doctor are available there from 9-6pm, Monday-Friday, and 12-6pm Sat and 12-2pm Sunday. Not only that but he really did seem to care!
80's Music & Fashion
February 01, 2004
Why don't some people get that not all 80's music was good?
Despite some Depeche Mode, FGTH, and Police classics, there was still loads of tat: Nikita, Nik Kershaw, not to mention Rick Astley.
The fashions of the 80's are not much better. When I saw someone recently wearing a jacket with a raised shoulder, I thought it looked gammy. Same reaction as I had when I first saw it in the 80's. Just because we're 20 years on, a little wiser, infinitely sharper, doesn't mean that things that were once naff got anything better.
This applies to website design as well. I'm working on a site at the moment for a business coach. While researching what's hot and what's not in the world of business coaches, I couldn't believe the amount of poorly designed (c. 1995) sites that are out there. Luckily for my client, he came to Brightspark.
