Agile in the News

Are you concerned about using Agile in combination with an offshore delivery model? Are you worried that Agile will only work with small, co-located teams? Have others told you that the Agile way of working doesn’t fit with the cultural norms of several offshore environments? Are you concerned that Agile will only work with “highly skilled” workers?

Agile is well-known for working with small, co-located teams with "highly skilled" workers. Of course, common sense, research and experience tell us that small teams work better; that co-located teams work better; that "highly skilled" workers are more productive. If we could, we would certainly move to this model. But some of us work on initiatives that demand in the order of 10’s, 100’s and even 1000’s of people to delivery them. How do we translate the success Agile is so well known for into our highly complex, resource intensive environment? Laura Waite finds out... Read more

Ideas such as pair coaching and an apprentice coaching model to create internal coaching capabilities, has helped tranform them into an Agile organisation. This solution was driven from the "Laws of Strawberry Jam".

TOP TIPS

10 Ways to Succeed with Offshoring

Exoftware has worked with many companies to combine Agile and offshoring – here are some things we have learned:

  1. Make sure all the teams and stakeholders are on board with Agile and offshoring before you begin.
  2. Ensure everyone involved with the project gets some training in Agile – especially the offshore teams.
  3. Use video-conferencing whenever you can to keep some face-to-face communication going consistently.
  4. Get team ambassadors in place early and visit each other as often as you can.
  5. Use things like "show and tells" to get the teams talking.
  6. Use daily stand ups and set a time that works for all teams.
  7. Keep and maintain transparency on the project between teams.
  8. Test infect all the teams, so it is ingrained in everyone.
  9. Over communicate – use digital pictures, emailing, etc.
  10. Provide weekly or daily progress charts so everyone knows what is going on.
